It's Sunday and we're not really excited about all the games. We decide to skip the Algeria vs Slovenia and go for a long walk towards a bar. I love this purposeful type of exercising. Algeria ends up losing and I'm reminded again that Egypt, the best African team, is not here representing Africa.
We cross town, making stops at the reservoir, boarding school and military barracks. Tourism is not very big here.
I'm definitely excited about the Ghana game so we stop at an expat bar on the edge of town and refresh ourselves with some Kuche Kuche(local beer) and some tea (an odd english drink very popular here). At first, we have the place to ourselves and the game is a bit boring. But a few expats trickle in and the game picks up as well. Ghana scores and seals the first African victory in the tournament but there are no Africans in sight to share the excitement.
We head back back home under a waxing moon giving us a full view of the starry sky. It's vast and the view of the Universe's backyard is super clear.
We are a bit tired and we have a long day tomorrow but the last game of the day is very exciting. Me and Oli are rooting for the Aussies but Dumi has a big crush on the Germans; he's smitten by their efficient and precise football. I have never heard anyone say they like German football; it's effective, it wins cups, they score goals, but it's not pretty. Except to an engineer's mind.
We're crashing early. We're crossing Malawi tomorrow starting our descent into South Africa. We have some business to take care in the morning (mostly car related stuff) and then we're off. I'm going to try to buy the World Cup CD. We've listened to K'naan's song everyday so far. Shakira's song is not so bad either. Apparently it's a remake of a song that was a hit around these parts a few years back.
Omigosh, I looove your blog! So fun to picture you three walking dusty streets from bar to bar and taking in games in so many different towns and cities. Thanks for helping us live it with you! xoxo ~Yolanda
