Road Trip: Monday (6/14) - Mzuzu to Lilongwe (Malawi) 500 km

After Dumi spent the morning taking care of our car travel documents, we departed lovely Mzuzu for the last time. The road trip is officially on. Our goal for the day was to arrive at a lakeside, beach resort in time for Holland vs Denmark. After missing the entire first half we arrive at Chintheche, our most beautiful location for catching a game yet. When we arrive, about six workers are taking in the game at the outdoor bar overlooking Lake Malawi.

As we start watching one this is for certain: Holland is playing badly. But, it's better to see them gain momentum than lose steam as they usually do in World Cups. They win comfortably and we celebrate with a picnic on the beach. Really tempted to go in the water, but alas we must reach the capital this night in time for the Italy/Paraguay match…

We arrive in Lilongwe just in time for Italy vs Paraguay. We watch the first half at pristinely clean and glimmering white food-courty kind of pizzeria/burger spot. We noticed the place had a nice TV and plenty of seating and Dumi was hungry so it worked out. Granted none of the patrons were even remotely interested, but the staff were trying to watch the game between serving folks. Unsatisfied with the atmosphere, we rush to find a lodge to catch the second half. After booking the last room available, we run back to their smoked filled bar packed with locals, expats and backpackers. We cheer Paraguay on but they can only manage a tie. The whole place was pulling for the Paraguayans and we were quite impressed with their efforts against the mighty Italians.
